Soapstone Valley Trail in Washington, DC!

Hike the Soapstone Valley Trail in Washington, DC!

Length: 1.2 Miles

Difficulty level: This trail hike crosses the creek multiple times, which might make it difficult for some.

Location: 2 blocks from Van-ness Metro Stop (Red Line)

While Washington, DC is known for its historic monuments and attractions, it also offers its residents and visitors beautiful hiking trails with breathtaking views!

Agent Daniel Luke Jones usually starts his hikes by stopping at his favorite bakery, Bread Furst Bakery! Apart from being a bakery with delicious coffee and sweets, their shelves are also loaded with specialty items- such as ham and smoked salmon, jams and pickles, and also cheeses and fresh juices! This neighborhood spot is more than just your average coffee shop, and is definitely worth checking out before (or after) your hike at Soapstone Valley!

Soapstone Valley Trail is an out-and-back trail meaning that it starts and ends on different roads. If you are driving in, we recommend parking on Albemarle Street NW as there is a bunch of space for street parking. Once you enter the trail, it starts with a downhill slope that will bring you down to the creek. As Daniel mentioned, the trail is marked by yellow markings on the trees, making it easy to follow.

Keep in mind that the trail crosses the creek 7 times, so you want to make sure that you are wearing appropriate shoes! Every crossing has rocks that make it fairly easy for you to cross and also allows you to stop at the water and enjoy the beautiful scenery!

The trail ends at Broad Branch road where you can cross the street and enjoy some more of the trails that Rock Creek Park has to offer or turn back to complete your Soapstone Journey. If you decide to continue your hike and adventure out to more parks, be mindful of oncoming traffic at the end of Soapstone Valley.

Overall, Soapstone Valley is a beautiful and fairly easy trail for you to enjoy with your friends, family, and loved ones. Not only is it manageable for all ages, but it also allows you to experience amazing scenic views while still enjoying the Nations Capitol!
